Exploring the Determinants affecting the Efficiency of Public Schools

Evaluation of Schools in Bankura District, WB, India

To investigate the schools’ efficiency and its determinants, 89 public schools across Bankura district were asked to fill out questionnaires. It was found that exogenous factors like the type of school (boys’, girls’ or co-ed) significantly affected teaching efficiency, whereas students’ dropout rate could reduce the overall efficiency. Absenteeism among teachers was common, which negatively affected the teaching efficiency. However, innovative teaching techniques adopted by schools in the form of curricular change or promotion of extra-curricular activities had a surprisingly significant positive effect on learning outcomes.
